Paper choice

Use paper that is colored on one side, 3 × 3 inches (7.5 cm) per unit. Thin origami paper folds most crisply; printer paper works but is a little bulkier.

tools you'll need

  • Bone folder or fingernail for creasing
  • Scissors

let's make it!

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Step 1: Crease the square

Fold each square in half diagonally both ways and unfold, so you have an X crease. Keep the red side down.

  2. Step 2: Fold into a kite

Fold two adjacent edges to the center diagonal to make a kite shape. Crease firmly.

  3. Step 3: Make the point

Fold the kite in half along its center so the white sides show outward. This forms one point of the star.

  4. Step 4: Repeat

Make eight identical units. Accuracy matters: the points need to match for the star to close neatly.

  5. Step 5: Glue the units together

Apply glue to one side of a unit and nest it into the next. Continue around until all eight form a closed ring.

  6. Step 6: Add a hanger

Glue a loop of silver thread between two points at the back.
