Burlap and Lace Angel Ornament
This farmhouse-style angel is made from a single length of wide burlap ribbon, gathered in the middle to form both the wings and the skirt. A strip of lace softens the edge, and a pom-pom with a pipe cleaner halo finishes it off.

About this project
Wide wired burlap ribbon does most of the work here: it holds a fan shape on its own, so the angel keeps its form without any sewing. Pick lace that is about the same width as a finger so it shows clearly along the hem.

let's make it!
Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Trim the burlap with lace
Run a thin line of hot glue along one long edge of the burlap ribbon and press the lace trim onto it. This edge becomes the hem of the skirt.
Step 2: Fold accordion pleats
Fold the ribbon back and forth in 1-inch accordion pleats along its length, so you end up with a narrow stack.
Step 3: Cinch the middle
Wrap thin wire or strong thread tightly around the center of the stack and twist to secure. Fan out both halves: the top becomes the wings and the bottom the skirt.
Step 4: Make the head and halo
Glue the pom-pom just above the cinched center. Bend a short piece of pipe cleaner into a small ring with a stem, and glue the stem behind the pom-pom.
Step 5: Decorate the center
Glue two or three snowflake sequins down the cinched middle to hide the wire. Add a loop of thread behind the head for hanging.
pro tips!
Helpful craft tips
- Wired burlap holds the fan shape best.
- Spread the pleats evenly before the glue sets so the wings match.
Variations to try
- Swap the lace for gold ribbon for a more festive look.
- Use cream linen ribbon for a softer angel.
Safety tips
Hot glue can burn. Keep a bowl of cold water nearby and let children add sequins with white glue instead.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to sew anything?
No. The pleats are held together with wire or thread, and everything else is attached with hot glue.
What size burlap ribbon works best?
Ribbon around 5–6 inches wide gives full wings and skirt. Narrower ribbon makes a smaller ornament.
